During the chaos of 2020, painting was both a balm and a challenge — but the idea for Halo came very clearly and flowed almost effortlessly from my brush. I love the centeredness and calm in this piece, and I am so excited to share it as my very first print.

After the launch of my website in July with Halo as my very first print, I received an overwhelming amount of love and support for my work. Now, this piece will always represent the glow of gratefulness I felt during that time.

Stepping out of trauma and into living authentically, my imagination flourished, making me feel a bit eccentric at times. So much can be learned from the broad spectrum of human emotion. When I accept and lean into the less positive side of my emotional experiences, I often find myself peaceful and more capable of self reflection. This painting is a reminder to me of the neutral nature of emotions. How none are good or bad, and all can be beautiful and lead to new growth.

For so much of my life I rejected my negative experiences. Anything that didn’t bring a positive feeling was suppressed or ignored, leaving me missing out on many aspects of myself and of life. But now, I’m learning to accept the softness and the sharp edges, along with the full spectrum of my emotional color space. Because every part of the human experience matters.

Echeveria Blue Bird was one of the first succulents I ever owned, and this painting is a celebration of what makes these plants special to me: their vibrancy, resilience, and their reminder to keep growing beautifully even when times are tough.

The concept of the fae has always fascinated me. As a kid, I even had a faerie-themed bedroom with this color palette. In my head, this piece is faerie tales and mythology — a plant thriving in the underworld, where there is mystery and danger with calm and beauty.

The reference for the succulent came from my own collection.

I grew up in a home where belonging was something you had to earn, so my feelings about family have always been a bit complicated. And when I see the way succulents growing in these tight, snuggly clusters—like they’re these little bursting families—I feel drawn to that natural belonging and closeness but also a little repulsed by the reminder of my own childhood wounds. But with this painting, I want to remind myself of the hope in community and found family, where we can be both close and distinct. Where support systems can nurture and not suffocate, and where breaking off to start your own cluster is celebrated—no matter what form it takes or who you choose to love.

The Korean word for “succulent” literally translates to “rock lotus,” which—ironically—I didn’t know until after making this painting. Learning that fact added even more joy to the playful imaginings of this work. This painting is an expression of hope for myself as I’m learning to take things less seriously and simply enjoy the fun expressions of my inner reality.
